Kyma Chief Science Officer to Discuss KO-Switch™ Device Performance at Photonics West

Kyma Technologies, Inc., a leading supplier of crystalline aluminum nitride (AlN) and gallium nitride (GaN) materials and related products and services, today announced an upcoming presentation by their Chief Science Officer on the performance characteristics of their recently launched high speed high power photoconductive semiconductor switch (PCSS) at Photonics West in San Jose, CA which takes place this week.

Kyma’s announced their PCSS product as their first device product just late last year, calling it the KO-Switch™, a double entendre meaning both “Kyma Optical” and “KnockOut” because it is optically triggered and because of its ability to generate a powerful pulse of electromagnetic radiation in less than one-billionth of a second.

Dr. Jacob Leach, Kyma’s Chief Science Officer, will present the talk entitled “High voltage bulk GaN-based photoconductive switches for pulsed power applications” at the conference. He has been working closely with Kyma’s Chief Technology Officer, Dr. Bob Metzger, who has served as Kyma’s lead in the ~ 2 year long KO-Switch™ development project. Leach’s presentation will outline how the device characteristics including erected voltage, on-resistance, and current density, vary with electric field bias and varying pulsed laser excitation parameters.

Dr. Leach's presentation is paper 8625-69 and will be given at 3:00PM on Thursday in Session 14: Novel Devices.

Kyma has sold several units of the KO-Switch™ already in 2013 and is working with a number of large companies to understand its potential to support several high performance high power switching applications.
