Kyma Announces Progress in Gas Sensor Technology Development

Kyma Technologies, Inc., a leading supplier of advanced materials solutions that promote safety and energy efficiency, today announced progress in their collaboration with Duke University in the development of novel gas sensor array technology.

Kyma has partnered with Duke University to further advance and ultimately commercialization this platform sensor technology, which is competitive with existing optical sensors which are much more expensive and bulky.

Professor April Brown’s group at Duke University discovered the initial sensor technology that utilizes surface functionalization of simple semiconductor resistor structures and had previously demonstrated parts per billion (ppb) detection of nitric oxide (NO).

The Kyma – Duke sensor team’s recent accomplishments include: 1) extension to detection of carbon dioxide (CO2) at the parts per million (ppm) level, 2) demonstration of sensor reliability under thermal cycling, and 3) wireless transmission of sensor signal for remote detection using commercial off the shelf (COTS) radio transmitter electronics.

Duke Professor April Brown commented, “It is a joy to work with Kyma who brings strong commercialization focus to the team.”

Kyma’s CTO Bob Metzger, who is Kyma’s Principal Investigator on the project, added, “This platform sensor technology has great commercialization potential. We see no fundamental barriers to being able to disseminate this technology to early adopters within the next couple of years.”

The Kyma – Duke sensor research is partially funded by Army Research Office (ARO) under the SBIR/STTR program with Dr. Jennifer Becker serving as the ARO Contracting Officer Technical Representative (COTR).
