Kyma’s Chief Science Officer to Present Bulk GaN Growth Technology Advances at International Workshop on Bulk Nitride Semiconductors

Kyma Technologies, Inc., a leading supplier of advanced materials solutions that promote safety and energy efficiency, announced today the participation of Dr. Jacob Leach in the 2013 International Workshop on Bulk Nitride Semiconductors (IWBNS).

The 2013 IWBNS is an invitation only meeting and will be held during the 1st week in October at Kloster Seeon, a famous Bavarian monastery. The workshop is designed to implement and increase information exchange and collaboration among academic, industrial, and government scientists on challenges of growing high quality Group III nitride crystals with low concentration of structural defects and controlled conductivity type.

Dr. Leach is Kyma’s Chief Science Officer and is responsible for continuous improvement of Kyma’s crystal growth and fabrication processes. He also co-leads Kyma’s nitride semiconductor device efforts, along with Kyma’s CTO Dr. Bob Metzger.

Dr. Leach’s workshop presentation is entitled “In-situ monitoring techniques for highly repeatable growth of bulk GaN by HVPE.” While in-situ monitoring has long contributed to helping understand and improve the ability to control cold wall crystal growth processes such as MOCVD and MBE, its application to hydride vapor phase epitaxy (HVPE) is more challenging because HVPE is a hot-wall process. Kyma has made key advances in this area, which Dr. Leach will describe, including application of ultraviolet (UV) absorption spectroscopy for monitoring GaCl species, residual gas analysis for monitoring a number of intentional and unintentional chemical species, and an in-situ metallic gallium cell load sensor.

Kyma is a leading supplier of both HVPE growth systems and crystalline GaN materials grown by HVPE. Kyma’s HVPE equipment product line includes tools which are outfitted with one or more of these advanced sensors.

The International Workshop on Bulk Nitride Semiconductor (IWBNS) is chaired by Dr. Elke Meissner, a senior scientist in the Department of Crystal Growth at the Fraunhofer Institute of Integrated Systems and Device Technology (IISB) in Erlangen, Germany and head of the working group Defect Engineering.
