Kyma Presents at US Department of Energy Solid State Lighting Manufacturing Workshop

Kyma Technologies, Inc., a leading supplier of ultra-high purity crystalline gallium nitride (GaN) and aluminum nitride (AlN) materials and related products and services, today announced the participation of their CEO and President, Dr. Keith Evans, at the US Department of Energy Solid-State Lighting Manufacturing Workshop, held on April 21 and 22 in Fairfax, Virginia.

Evans gave an invited presentation entitled "Substrate Matters" to a diverse audience that included key government, commercial, and academic stakeholders in the US solid state lighting research, development, and manufacturing sectors.  His presentation focused on analysis of what substrate types were used the most today, what current substrate trends exist and why, and what future substrate technologies are likely to gain traction in order to support the continuing need to improve the cost and the performance of GaN-based light emitting diode (LEDs).

Key points made in Evans' presentation include:

  • AlN template substrates offer epitaxial growth throughput and cost reduction advantages as well as reduced wavelength binning and improved output power yield
  • GaN template substrates offer the same advantages as AlN template substrates plus a lower defect density and higher thermal conductivity surface for higher LED performance
  • Native GaN will ultimately become the preferred approach for LEDs once the manufacturing learning curve is further traversed

The presentation is available to the general public at http://apps1.eere.energy.gov/buildings/publications/pdfs/ssl/evans_fairfax09.pdf.
