Kyma Technologies, Inc., a leading supplier of ultra-high purity crystalline gallium nitride (GaN) and aluminum nitride (AlN) materials and related products and services, announced the signing of a US Navy Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) between the company and Naval Surface Warfare Center - Crane Division (NSWC Crane).

The CRADA formalizes and expands upon an ongoing effort between Kyma and NSWC Crane, who have been informally collaborating for over a year on advanced materials characterization analyses of Kyma's native GaN products. The CRADA Principal Investigators are Chuck Pagel of NSWC Crane and Drew Hanser of Kyma.

Dr. Hanser, who is Kyma's Chief Technology Officer and Vice President of Business Development, stated, "NSWC Crane's capabilities include a number of advanced materials and device characterization and analysis tools and associated expertise. Formalization of this important collaboration represents an important step for Kyma towards furthering our understanding of how to bring better materials solutions to our customers."

Kyma's CEO Dr. Keith Evans added, "It has been a great pleasure getting to know Chuck and his colleagues and to work with their team. We have already benefited in several ways from this collaboration. A very recent example is the characterization of impurity concentrations within our GaN crystalline boules. This represents important feedback for Kyma's native GaN crystal growth effort."

Kyma's Chief Scientist, Dr. Tanya Paskova, will present some of the recent characterization results from collaboration with the NSWC Crane group in her presentation next month in the Opto 2008 Symposium of Photonics West 2008 (see http://spie.org/photonics-west.xml), which will be held during the week of January 19th - 24th in San Jose, CA.

The CRADA covers a period of three (3) years.

About Kyma Technologies

Kyma was launched in 1998 as a spin out of North Carolina State University's Materials Science and Engineering Department to pursue the development of gallium nitride (GaN) and aluminum nitride (AlN) substrates for a broad range of high performance nitride semiconductor device applications.

Kyma's diversified product offering includes: ultra-low defect density native (free-standing) GaN in customer-defined orientation including polar (c-plane Ga-face or N-face) and non-polar (a-plane and m-plane), GaN and AlN templates grown on sapphire and other substrates, and ultra-high purity polycrystalline GaN.

The market for nitride semiconductor devices is expected to surpass $9B by 2010. The combined addressable market for GaN and AlN substrates is expected to surpass $500M by 2010.
