Everett Carpenter - Virginia Commonwealth University

Full Professor, Department of Chemistry

Everett Carpenter is a Full Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) and a leading authority on nano-particle synthesis and characterization. He is also a co-founder of Nanofoundry, LLC, a VCU spinout high technology company and he previously served as the Director of the Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Program at VCU. Before joining VCU he worked as a Research Scientist at US Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) where he co-founded NRL's Nanoscience Institute where he worked with a team to advance the technology for synthesizing nanoscale magnetic materials for applications in next generation electronics and biomedicince.

At VCU Professor Everetts' research in the magnetics laboratory is focused on the synthesis and characterization of new nanomagnetic materials.  Current high efficiency motors utilize rare earth elements which are expensive and have uncertain supply chains.  His group has developed a new class of magnetic materials which contain no rare earths, an important goal to overcome rare earth supply chain challenges.

Professor Carpenter received his BS in Environmental Chemistry from Appalachian State University and his PhD in Inorganic Chemistry from the University of New Orleans.
